Student writes core values on poster

You can help us grow the Flyin Ryan Core Values Decisions program to introduce more students & teachers to this life-changing process.  This giving season, we have set a goal of raising $5,000 to take the next step in making this program available to schools across Vermont.

Here’s why:

In 2012-13, South Burlington, VT High School (SBHS) math teacher John Painter worked with school leaders to develop and introduce Flyin Ryan Decisions as a foundation of the school’s Sophomore Advisory program. Decisions has been in place now for four years at SBHS, where students have been guided in a reflective process to develop, decide and share their personal core values with peers, family and teachers, to guide their choices about academics, co-curricular activities, and life goals.

The program has begun to show positive results.   A school administrator comments:

“I’ve seen it change lives.  I’ve seen students who struggle, who haven’t had a lot of guidance at home… take advantage of this program to soar, to find their passions, and find direction.”  — Pat Phillips, Assistant Principal

Since then, Decisions has expanded to two more middle schools in Vermont.  Another Vermont high school plans to implement Decisions this year.  Teacher interest in the program is clearly growing!  To meet this need, and serve more schools, we must also grow our Foundation’s capacity and resources.

The Challenge:

Now, our goal is to enable students enrolled in Vermont’s 72 middle and high schools to use Flyin Ryan Decisions Program tools to construct self-composed Core Values, as the basis for creating state-mandated Personalized Learning Plans, and to guide their life choices.

We are working in partnership with the VT Student Assistance Corp. to prepare and distribute teachers’ resource guides with sample materials to use in the classroom, and provide handout materials to participating students.  We will also be training teachers and guidance counselors to work with students using these methods, and documenting student outcomes.  Eventually, we will expand this program to schools across the U.S. and beyond.
